A Christmas Carol, or originally known as A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, is a Victorian morality novel written by author Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812- June 9, 1870) and published in the December of 1843 by Chapman and Hall of the United Kingdom.

The novel got off to a fantastic start, selling over 6,000 copies in one week, a large amount for that time. Ironically, Dickens only wrote the book to pay off a debt, and today it is one of the best selling Christmas books of all time.

The driving force for Dickens’s creation was his disenchantment with the world's economic drives and greed. He believed that the problems with the world were caused by an obsession with money and climbing the social ladder. He made his feelings very clear in A Christmas Carol with themes focused on teaching a lesson.

Themes

On the outside, the novel A Christmas Carol seems to be a commentary on how greed is bad. On a closer look the book delves into many social and political aspects of the human condition. For instance, old Scrooge symbolizes “the man” who takes from the poor, without caring for their condition. By the end of the story Scrooge realizes his folly and gives more generously to the needy.

Many of the characters and places stand for things found in society, such as Ebenezer Scrooge stands for the greed of humanity, The Counting House stands for the time’s lust and greed and Utilitarianism.

Interesting Facts

A Christmas Carol became Dickens’s first ever public reading. It was held at the Birmingham Town Hall for the Industrial and Literary Institute, December 17, 1852. He continued public readings of A Christmas Carol until his death. Dickens intended the work to have a musical theme. For instance, the title, of course, is A Christmas Carol and the chapters are called staves instead of chapters.

In Hood's Magazine and Comic Review (1884), the poet Thomas Hood said about the story, "If Christmas, with its ancient and hospitable customs, its social and charitable observances, were in danger of decay, this is the book that would give them a new lease." And so it did. When the story was written, many people had stopped celebrating Christmas as much. After the books release, the holiday became popular once more. A Christmas Carol has been made into movies starting in 1908, plays, operas, radio shows, and television specials.

The practice of singing Christmas carols has been attributed to St. Francis of Assisi in the 12th century and despite many changes over the centuries continues today. Some of the carols that were sung at that time did not sit well with some of the religious leaders and have been lost forever. However, the practice of singing Christmas carols remains popular in many cultures. Today’s songs are usually renditions of many of the older songs used in past religious celebration.

To make Christmas carols more popular with the children, many of the songs used were written to address the follies of youth incorporating many holiday traditions. Since some of these traditions did not being until the late 19th century or the early 20th century, tracing their roots to American Song writers is easier. Songs such as Up on the Roof Top and Here Comes Santa Claus are often used to help children sing about one of their favorite holidays.

Christmas carols are often used as a means of sharing the spirit of the holiday and it has been said that people who do not appreciate Christmas carols lack the Christmas spirit. This can explain why groups of people gather together near the holiday and travel neighborhoods sharing their spirit with others though songs.

Origins Of Some Songs Remain A Mystery

Many of the Christmas carols sung today are based on religious beliefs and through the years they became tradition. It has often been noted that doing something repeatedly will turn it into a habit, but doing the same thing repeatedly at a specific time of year can turn it into a tradition.

Singing Christmas carols is no longer confined to religious ceremonies and communities often gather to share their spirit by joining in song festivals where their favorite Christmas carols are sung. Performers also join in the spirit by releasing their versions of their favorite Christmas carols for their fans to play throughout the holiday season. Most of these recording center on the religious aspect of the holiday.

However, it is not only the religious that have songs about the holiday and certain thoughts, such as those who write songs like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” or “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.” While these fanciful renditions may not fit the true description of Christmas carols, they generally are only heard a few times near the end of every December. With any luck, they will not become a tradition.

Believe it or not it is not only those who are seriously under the influence that join in on Christmas kareoke, although for many it helps. However, it is not necessarily how far under the influence a person is that makes them sound good while singing, as much as it is how much influence the listeners are that grades their singing ability. Despite all the jokes and good-natured jabs that are made regarding this entertainment venue, many people and families enjoy participating in Christmas kareoke, singing some of their favorite songs of the season.

Several disk jockeys who provide music for holiday parties also provide kareoke services and it is not unusual for the highlight of many holiday parties being inviting guests to participate in singing Christmas kareoke. Some folks freeze at the thought of being front and center with all of the attention on them while others thrive on the exposure, good or bad.

Whether a person can sing well or not does not enter the equation when they choose to participate in Christmas kareoke singing, but seldom can their enthusiasm be questioned. The screen will display all the words to the songs, but their ability to carry a tune may be brought into question the minute they being singing Christmas kareoke.

Many Stars Offer Kareoke Opportunities

Regardless of the music genre people enjoy singing along with Christmas songs and many of the top artists have made their holiday selections available for use with Christmas kareoke machines. Many people even buy their own portable kareoke players to use at home, but many of the less expensive models to not display the lyrics on a screen and have to be read from a song book.

Some of the more expensive models connect through the home CD player and television set and even allow for the recording of the entire show. Catching someone singing Christmas kareoke can be a great way to spread the family memories with those who could not attend the holiday party. Being able to sing has never been a requisite for grabbing a microphone and shouting out the words to a favorite holiday song and no matter how good a person may sing, there is sure to be a critic in the room.

There is also a way to use Christmas kareoke as a fundraiser for many charities. People may be willing to pay to have a CD of them singing a Christmas song or two, and by selling the CDs any money raised can be donated to the company

There is something about music that helps people relate to the holidays and Christmas songs can evoke a wide range of emotions. From songs having roots in religious ceremonies, those celebrating that talk of love and sharing to some that may seem just plain silly Christmas songs can help celebrate the season of good cheer. Possibly the earliest memory of holiday music is from songs learned in grade school as young students begin to see the different sides of music from songs like Silent Night to others such as Frosty the Snowman.

Retailers have gotten into the act of playing Christmas songs in the areas of stores in which holiday decorations are displayed for sale, hoping to entice buyers into the holiday spirit. This subliminal tactic works well, even before Halloween when retailer display the holiday merchandise, long before many customers are ready to think about decorating their home for the holidays.

In a majority of the stores, the Christmas songs being played are the ones considered to be classics and are offered quietly, at least until the so-called Black Friday sales the day after Thanksgiving. It is called Black Friday because with the sales from the that most retailers find their finances in the black for the year.

Everyone Gets Into The Musical Act

Celebrities, especially established singers get into the act for the holidays, many of them producing recordings of some of their favorite Christmas songs. For some of them this can increase their exposure to the public and for others, it may be more of a subtle attempt to revive a declining career. However, some celebrities not known for their singing expertise have released albums/CDs of favorite Christmas songs possibly as a joke.

In some households Christmas songs take over the family music players beginning when they begin decorating for the holiday. While it can add to the spirit of the season while setting up the tree or installing exterior illumination, beginning to play Christmas songs too early in the season can make them seem tiresome by the time December 25th arrives. Other families only play Christmas songs for special family gatherings or on Christmas Eve.

In the heat of Christmas shopping, decorating and buying gifts for everyone on their shopping lists, most find that listening to Christmas songs can help reduce the stress usually felt during the season. It can have a calming effect and make all the extra work worth the effort.

Persons who continue to pine away for a white Christmas obviously love the cold weather and have no problem driving on snow-covered streets. It was apparently easy for Irving Berlin to pen the lyrics of the song sitting in the Arizona sunshine in 1940 as he wrote out his fond memories of Christmas times spent in the north. One of the oldest holiday songs in existence, White Christmas has the honor of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling single of all time.

The first public performance of White Christmas was by Bing Crosby on the Kraft Music Hall radio show, receiving spotty acclaim, but following its performance in the musical Holiday Inn in 1942 as a duet with Marjorie Reynolds, the song became a favorite, especially among the troops during World War II. In 1954, it was the theme song for the movie of the same name and cemented its place in American musical history.

The song White Christmas has achieved the status of being the most widely recorded song, having been sung by well over 100 artists as singles and as part of holiday compilations. It continues to be one of the songs most often used by Christmas carolers and during holiday specials by most performers.

Song Captivates Many With Holiday Memories

While there have certainly been numerous years with a white Christmas since 1940, the song continues to evoke strong feelings and memories, especially of those who have chosen to live in warmer climates. They may settle into their beach chairs by the ocean and sing White Christmas as they long for the days gone by. However, they show little desire to leave the warmth for a cold December in the north.

For many people, a white Christmas is part of the holiday as they were growing up and the song continues to inspire wishes for snow to begin on Christmas Eve and be melted away by the following morning. Many holiday decorations use faux snow to help create the winters scenes so often associated by with the holidays. While Bing Crosby often downplayed his role in making the song famous, here is little doubt that the version re-recorded in 1947 is more famous than the original.

During the early parts of December virtually everyone living in the north planning to celebrate Christmas, begin looking at weather patterns to see if a white Christmas is in the forecast. After all, Santa Claus Can land his sleigh easier if it has snow for the runners.

Christmas is a time for singing, sharing and giving. Everyone looks at Christmas as a way to celebrate with family and friends. It is even a time when people who never sing are found singing Xmas songs at home, at work and even out in public. Xmas songs are heard on the radio, on cell phones, in the stores and on the corners. You will see carolers out weeks before Christmas spreading the joy of Christmas. Xmas songs are sung in churches and in schools. Everywhere you go, you will hear Xmas songs being sung by different groups and different recording artists.

Newer Xmas Songs

Some of the newer Xmas songs are just as beautiful sounding as the traditional Christmas songs, but with a new twist. You might hear “Behold a Miracle” or “Christmas is Your Birthday Lord”. These newer songs are not heard as often as the more traditional Christmas songs. Many different artists record them and some are just instrumentals with no words. You can find some very relaxing and soothing Xmas songs that are not as jovial as the Christmas songs you hear on the radio or preformed by carolers.

Traditional Xmas Songs

“Hark the Harold Angels Sing” and “It Came upon the Midnight Clear” are some of the more traditional songs you will hear at Christmas time. “O Christmas Tree” is a favor of everyone’s. A joyous sound leaves people feeling all warm inside. You will hear many television shows singing this song as a way of saying Merry Christmas to the viewers. All the older Christmas songs are the ones you hear everywhere.

Funny Xmas Songs

Many recording artists have taken some of the songs of Christmas and turned them into funny and humorous songs. Some of the Xmas songs are not meant for kids to listen to and some are done by characters such as the Chipmunks. When it comes to Xmas songs, everyone gets in on the band wagon. There are more varieties of one Christmas song than any other songs every recorded.

You may find that you hear a song on the radio, but finding that particular artist and song might be a little hard. You can type in the name of the song on the Internet and see a return of more than just one version of the song. Some are done with a fast beat and some are done slower. You can however, find all the songs you like for Christmas with the click of the mouse – happy surfing!
